But I was still surprised at the fact that the laptop shut down without warning with what appeared to be a decent charge. I already knew this from checking the system profiler. It also showed 356 charge cycles which my battery was rated for a life limit of 300. I took my Laptop to an Apple store where the Genius showed me that my battery was holding less than 1/2 the charge of its original capacity. I also installed and ran AppleJack but it did not help my issue.

I don't see how that would explain the fact that the battery reported a full charge, yet the MBP still shut down within seconds of having its power adapter unplugged. Some suggest that heat causes slight warpage, and that the slight warpage causes the battery to fail to align properly with electrical contacts. When the new battery's been in 6 mos., it'll be interesting to see if the probs return. but if it reappears, I'm glad I have the service record with Apple showing that it's been a problem since that date. About 10 days later, the battery was at the store, ready for me to pick it up. After a few minutes examination at the "Genius" bar, the genius ordered a new battery for me. It took me almost a month to decide when to do it, but I am glad I did. I experienced precisely the same symptoms, and went through an AppleCare service call that led to my choosing to meet someone at a local Apple store. I'm with robg on this: if you're covered by warranty service, use it.
Hope this help some of you get your laptops back up. I put a CD into the slot and ripped it in iTunes several times until I drained the battery. When I opened the lid again, it never shut down again. So I plugged it back in and rebooted, closed the lid again, and unplugged it for another couple of hours. It did not shut down right away, but about 10 minutes later or so. The next morning, the machine was at 87% charge when I lifted the lid back up. So I left it like that all night to push it beyond its shutdown charge limit. Like that, it would stay on indefinitely. This time, again out of a desperate attempt at something magical, I realized that, even though the machine would immediately shutdown when unplugged, it would not do so if I closed the lid and put it to sleep. The second time it was on a Saturday evening at home, where I had no access to a second similar machine. Each time I reset the power manager and plugged and unplugged the machines several times. Yes it took a couple of times for some reason.
Swapping them back and forth a couple of times did the trick. My battery behaved normally on his machine and his worked just fine one mine. Out of desperation I asked a coworker who has an identical machine to swap batteries for the morning. The first time this happened to me, a couple of months ago, I was at the office. When you reach this point, trying to restart the laptop on the battery immediately shuts down the computer after a fibble attempt at startup. Sometimes it happens only when the battery reaches a specific charge level after being unplug. Sometimes this happens immediately after unplugging the machine from the wall, with a 100% battery charge. It's the now-classic "charged battery laptop that shuts down when unplugged" syndrome. It is by far, the best computer I have ever owned and used, but twice during this period, the battery has died on me. I have a six-month-old Macbook pro (2.16 GHz).
